Mewlana Jalaluddin Rumi
Jalal
al-Din Rumi was born on September 30, 1207 in Balkh (Afghanistan). His
father Baha' Walad was descended from the first caliph Abu Bakr and was influenced
by the ideas of Ahmad Ghazali, brother of the famous philosopher.
Baha' Walad's sermons were published and still exist as Divine Sciences (Ma'arif). He fled the Mongols with his son in 1219, and it was reported that at Nishapur young Rumi met 'Attar, who gave him a copy of his Book of Mysteries (Asrar-nama).
After a pilgrimage to Mecca and other travels, the family went to Rum (Anatolia). Baha' Walad was given an important teaching position in the capital at Konya (Iconium) in 1228 by Seljuk king 'Ala' al-Din Kayqu

Two Kinds of Intelligence
There are two kinds of intelligence: one acquired,
as a child in school memorizes facts and concepts
from books and from what the teacher says,
collecting information from the traditional sciences
as well as from the new sciences.
With such intelligence you rise in the world.
You get ranked ahead or behind others
in regard to your competence in retaining
information. You stroll with this intelligence
in and out of fields of knowledge, getting always more
marks on your preserving tablets.
There is another kind of tablet, one
already completed and preserved inside you.
A spring overflowing its springbox. A freshness
in the center of the chest. This other intelligence
does not turn yellow or stagnate. It's fluid,
and it doesn't move from outside to inside
through conduits of plumbing-learning.
This second knowing is a fountainhead
from within you, moving out.

Υπάρχουν δύο είδη νοημοσύνης: Η μία αποκτιέται
όταν το παιδί στο σχολείο αποστηθίζει γεγονότα και ιδέες
από βιβλία και από αυτά που λέει ο δάσκαλος,
μαζεύοντας πληροφορίες από τις παραδοσιακές επιστήμες
καθώς και από νέες επιστήμες.
Με τέτοια νοημοσύνη ανατέλλεις στον κόσμο.
Κατατάσσεσαι μπροστά ή πίσω από άλλους
ανάλογα με την ικανότητα σου στο να παρακρατάς
πληροφορίες. Κάνεις τη βόλτα σου με αυτή τη νοημοσύνη
μέσα και έξω από πεδία της γνώσης, παίρνοντας πάντα περισσότερες
σημειώσεις πάνω στις διατηρημένες σου πλάκες.
Υπάρχει ένα άλλο είδος πλάκας, ένα είδος
ήδη ολοκληρωμένο και διατηρημένο μέσα σου.
Μια πηγή που πλημμυρίζει την δεξαμενή της. Μια φρεσκάδα
στο κέντρο του στήθους. Αυτή η άλλη νοημοσύνη
δεν ωχριά ούτε λιμνάζει. Είναι υγρό,
και δεν κινείται από έξω προς τα μέσα
μέσω υδραυλικών αγωγών μάθησης.
Αυτή η δεύτερη γνώση είναι ένα συντριβάνι
από μέσα σου, κινούμενο προς τα έξω.
